Spotlight on Stonehouse

February, 2016

Stonehouse is a town within the Stroud District.  The town is situated approximately nine miles south of the centre of Gloucester and three miles west of the centre of Stroud.  The M5 motorway and Stonehouse railway station (located on the “Golden Valley” line) with a direct link to London, provides residents a slice of the rural life with the convenience of excellent transport links.  The population of the town currently stands at just under 8000.

There is a primary school within the town which accommodates 360 pupils over 2 campuses.  The secondary school, Maidenhill, is a mixed school for ages 11-16.

One of the most well-known establishments in the area is Wycliffe College. The school was founded in 1882 by G. W. Sibly as an all-boys school, however it is now co-educational. One of the school's houses, Haywardsend, is one of the town's oldest buildings, an old Tudor farmhouse.

A community Centre is located near the Town's High Street, together with a festival of good shops, Post Office, Town hall, butchers, banks, several food places and a building society. The town is well served by Doctors and Dentists alike.

Stonehouse enjoys a splendid rural location on the River Frome just as it enters the Severn Vale. Ideally placed at the edge of the Cotswold’s, Stonehouse offers a wonderful opportunity to live and work in the countryside.

There is a real mix of properties in Stonehouse.  There was a manor house built in stone - quite different from the many wattle and daub buildings that were normally found. So the properties vary in age from 1086 right to the present day. When the Brickworks opened in 1891 there was further development and a lot of the properties in the town today were built around that time.

There are a diverse range of properties from retirement apartments, bungalows, houses and even converted barns. The prices vary as well with prices for apartments starting at around £100,000 to larger properties in excess of £600,000.
